For a short-let property, a smart lock is only doing its job if it can:

• Generate a new access code (or app-based key) per booking, without you manually setting it each time
• Expire that code automatically at check-out, not on a schedule you have to remember to update
• Give you a log of when the door was actually opened, useful for disputes about early/late check-in
• Keep working if your WiFi drops for a day — a guest arriving to a lock that can't reach the internet is a real support call you don't want

A lock fitted without wiring up the cloud account, the booking integration, and the automation rules technically 'works' — it locks and unlocks — but it hasn't actually solved the problem of not wanting to hand over keys in person.
