Smart Locks in Manchester City Centre
Almost every job in the city centre is an apartment, and apartments come with one constraint people only discover halfway through: you control your own front door, not the way into the building.
Your door, not the communal entrance
The main door into the block belongs to the freeholder or the management company, and its entry system is theirs to change, not yours. We fit to your flat's own entrance door. In practice that is all most people need: guests still buzz in at the street door, then let themselves into the flat with a code instead of meeting you for a key.
If you want the communal door changed too, that is a conversation with the building manager first. We are happy to spec it for them, but nobody should fit anything to a shared entrance without their written agreement.
Flat entrance doors are usually fire doors
The door from a communal corridor into a flat is normally a fire door, and its rating depends on the door, the frame and the ironmongery working as one assembly. That rules some locks out and makes the fitting method matter more than usual.
We check this before quoting. If a lock would compromise the door, we will say so rather than fit it and leave you with a problem at the next fire risk assessment.
Short-let turnover
City centre stock is heavily short-let, which is the case smart locks genuinely solve: a code per booking that expires at checkout, issued remotely, with no key handover and no lockbox screwed to a wall you do not own.
What it costs in the city centre
The price is the same in M1 as anywhere else we cover. There is no separate travel charge, because the first installation already covers the visit, the survey, the account setup and the handover — that is why a second lock on the same visit costs less than the first. Current figures are on the pricing page, and the quote is fixed before anything is touched.
What the visit looks like in a block
City centre jobs need one thing arranged in advance that suburban ones do not: getting in. Tell us how access works — concierge, fob, a neighbour, or you meeting us — and we will book a slot around it rather than turning up and hoping.
After that it is the same everywhere: check the door and the frame, fit the lock, set up the codes with you, and leave you able to issue and revoke access without calling us. If the door turns out to be unsuitable once we see it, we say so and you pay nothing.
Questions
Frequently asked
For your own flat's entrance door, usually not — but check your lease, because some are specific about alterations to the door or its ironmongery, particularly where it is a fire door. For the communal entrance you definitely do, and that is the management company's decision rather than ours.
Yes, because they do different jobs. The entry system controls the street door; the smart lock controls yours. Guests buzz in as they always did, then let themselves into the flat with a code instead of meeting you.
That is our problem, not yours. We factor city centre access into the quote and do not add it afterwards.
